
– There is a small JPG file embedded within the raw file. ( There are now more than 200 raw formats, and growing almost daily). This software must specifically support the camera file format that you have since virtually every camera model is different. – To obtain an image from a raw file requires that you use special software from either the camera manufacturer or a third party. Others, such as all DSLRs, let you have the raw file, and optionally, a JPG file as well. Some, like various point-and-shoots, throw the raw data away after generating a JPG.
